DISTURBED 'Mosh Pit' Update: High Attendance Blamed For Increased Number Of Injuries
December 22, 2006Corinthia McCoy of the Green Bay Press-Gazette has revealed more details about Tuesday night's (Dec. 19) DISTURBED concert at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin where between 25 and 30 people suffered from either cuts, bruises, or overheating after participating in a mosh pit, according to the Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department.
Two people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Officers said one passed out.
A PMI official downplayed the injuries, saying that many suffered from heat exhaustion.
"Mosh pits have been around for many, many, many years," said Terry Charles, public relations manager for PMI and the Resch Center. "It's not that uncommon."
Charles said those needing medical attention was higher than usual because attendance for a hard rock concert was also up — 5,731 compared with about 3,000 normally.
"That's a lot of people for this type of concert," he said.
Charles said that at any concert, police are aware they will have to treat someone.
The band DISTURBED is headlining the Music as a Weapon tour, with support acts STONE SOUR, FLYLEAF and NONPOINT opening the show.
Javen Lauren, 14, of Marquette, Mich., attended with his uncle and friend. He said the concert was an early Christmas gift and his first time seeing a mosh pit.
"In the mosh pit, you see people get elbowed and pushed around," Lauren said.
Lauren said the three were in the area of the mosh pit, and knew things were going to get rowdy when someone asked if they wanted to start the pushing frenzy.
"It started to get too crazy, and we thought we better leave before we get hurt," he said. "We just knew it was going to get pretty wild."
Police arrested two, one for underage drinking and the other for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Five also were cited for smoking violations, according to officials.
The Brown County Sheriff's Department was also called for a report of battery between two women who participated in the mosh pit.
